5. I like a Christmas story the most. But if I had to chose a second it would be How the Grinch Stole Christmas.
6. It kind of make me nervous that people will just go out and do this, and there are no other public pretenses for it. I'm sure that he didn't just decide to go do it out of the blue, but what makes me nervous is there was no warning whatsoever, and that's sort of a wake up call. I think a long time in prison would've been sufficient punishment for him if he had lived. I don't think that society should be doing anything. Everyone has there own right to think and believe what they want. We all have the right to believe what we want and act how we want as long as it doesn't break the law. State and  federal government shouldn't be working to stop something like this from happening again. It's awful that things like this does happen, but the only way to do that would be to attempt to stop people from thinking their own thoughts, which is not only wrong, but impossible.

6. This is an incredibly high increase. It raises from $1.25 to $1.75, now making the total trip $3.50. For people who ride the city bus daily, this is an incredibly big problem. This means that if you ride it twice a day, say to get too an from work, you will be spending now an extra $730 per year on transportation. And that's if you have a job meaning a steady source of income. Imagine if you are poor and unemployed, and depend on the bus to get everywhere, riding it multiple times everyday. This could raise your cost for transportation thousands of dollars per year. It's incredible what an extra 50 cents can make with every trip.

6. Net neturality means that service providers should allow access to all content without blocking or not providing certain websites. I don't think that the government should be involved in internet regulation, considering many senators have already been pocketed by big companies. I think that net neutrality should be a goal to reach, as then we can have equality between small companies and larger international companies. Ted Cruz see's net neutrality as a threat to internet freedom. This makes sense as too that he's probably been bought up by some large corporal industry, and he wants anything but internet freedom. Honestly, this is a good example of why I find Ted Cruz to be a moronic sounding imbecile. He talks about how net neutrality would be the death of internet freedom, when really it's the definition.

2nd opinions piece

Violence on TV is present in almost any show on television (excluding shows geared towards toddlers and younger children and such), but is it a problem?

Many people say that TV shows may evoke violent behavior from children who watch too much TV, which I think is true.

Too much of anything will change someones behavior, however what I don't agree with is the amount of TV at which they say can affect children.

The American Academy of Child and Adolescent Psychiatry says that single show may evoke rash or over aggressive behavior in children, which I find to be ludicrous.

That child to feel and act more aggressive after watching a single show would need to be seriously messed up in the head.

But I do see where they are coming from. For example, whenever I see a movie at the movie theatre, say for example "Pirates of the Caribbean", when I walk out of the theatre, I wanna be a pirate, regardless of my age.

However, even though I feel this way, I don't run away from my parents to go sail the 7 seas, that's just unheard of and ridiculous.

There is an extremely high amount of violence on TV today though then there was 10 years ago.

Today's culture has become somewhat de-sensitized to violence and sees it as just another part of daily life.

The sad thing is this rise in violence is not just exhibited through fictional "detective" and "spy" shows, but our own local and national news.

It seems that they are only trying to focus on negative things happening in the world, ranging from things such as the never ending crisis in the middle east to that local shooting that happened on the other side of the tracks in your city.

This is actually happening, it's not some random case on Castle or Sherlock, this is real life.

However, is violence in TV really that big of a problem? It's just another element to TV, just another thing to watch.

Who says that violent even does anything to people who watch TV? Maybe some people are just getting all bent out of shape because they are a bunch a sensitive whining babies.

Seriously, it could be looked upon just like "offensive language". If you're watching a violent TV show, that's your choice.

Who's to say that you aren't the one "numbing" yourself to this gruesome and gory subject.

You don't ever have to watch TV, let alone watch violent TV shows. If you do, and feel like you want to go out and be violent, you are letting the program do that to you. It's your choice on what you watch and what you feel.

However, regardless of whether or not it's your own fault, the phrase "too much of good thing" should be changed to "too much of anything.

If you watch hours and hours on end of TV, over and over, then yes, you are going to start feeling like that is all that matters, and perhaps act like other characters, and if it's a violent show, then exhibit violent behavior.

My point is, violence on TV is an issue. But only if you let it be, you monitor your self on what you watch, and how much.

Opinions Article

"Freedom of speech" is the most prominent amendment to our constitution, but not completely evident in our everyday life.
Cursing words shouldn't be excluded from our everyday vocabulary, and should be perfectly accepted words used in daily life.
Cursing, cussing, or swearing whatever you would like to call it, has been deemed socially unacceptable in today's society in public.
You never hear anyone swearing in front a teacher, a boss, or a client. However, we have all sworn at one point in time have we not?
If we cuss in private, why not in public? The only difference is how many people are present when we do it.
Parents always preach to children that swearing is "wrong" or "a sin".
But what even is swearing? The dictionary definition is "to use profane oaths or language".
Profanity is defined as "characterized by an irreverence or contempt to god".
If it all comes down to religion, then isn't the definition of swearing being wrong based entirely off other peoples beliefs?
But that's an entirely different topic, that I'm not going to get into that right now.
Why do you think people get offended when people swear anyway? Why do you get offended (if you do) if somebody swears?
You see black people all the time calling each other "n**ga" and none of them are ever offended. It's more like a sign of "brotherhood".
Swearing more than half the time is used non-serious or for emphasis, like any "very" or "extremely".
It's extremely easy to tell if somebody to means it offensively by other things such as body language and tone of voice.
My point is, it's ridiculous that people get offended by swear words, as there only backing to it is that that simply is how society is.
If you are offended by swearing, that is entirely your decision, and you are choosing to be offended. It's just a word, get over it.
When I hang out with my friends, and somebody calls somebody else a b**ch, or a f*g, it's not like we all go silent in disbelief at how we think of each other.
How do we respond? Laugh, and retaliate back with another type of meaningless insult, whether it be a swear word or not.
I'm aware that many people, adolescents especially, swear only for the purpose of seeming tough and mature.
I think it's dumb, but I see why kids do it. Kids are always trying to act older like their elders.
As a kid, parents tell their kids not to swear, if not just avoiding that entire part of the English "language".
Once kids learn these words that their "not supposed to know or say", go right ahead and begin to use them.
It's like if a mom set's some cookies out on the table and says "You're going to be home alone for a while but don't eat any cookies.". This ensures the disappearance of at least a few cookies.
It's almost as if our society encourages kids to use this language in a way. So why in turn, do we get angry when it's our own fault with the help of human nature?
You don't need to look closely at this whole thing to see how ridiculous the entire "inappropriate language" mirage is.
All you need to do is get over the fact that it's just words. Wake up and smell the roses.

The newspaper would put this in the paper to show that even though these two articles express opinions from generally opposing groups, but on this one topic they had reached somewhat common ground, on that the government is no longer effective in making decisions.

Earthquake Story

Who: People residing in McHenry's Auto Supply
What:Earthquake/ Auto shop collapse
When: 8:12 am
Where: McHenry's Auto Supply
Why: Earthquake
How: Earthquake caused building collapse

At 8:12 am yesterday, an earthquake rumbled through San Fransisco, causing a collapse of McHenry's Auto Supply at 2324 Plum St..

The earthquake caused the shop to partially collapse, killing two people as well as injuring 6 others.

Of the 6 others who were injured, only 6 were critically injured and required hospitalization, and they were transported to Hayward General Hospital.

"2 people were killed in yesterday's collapse of McHenry's Auto Shop, and we will be withholding those names until their families have been notified," public information officer of the Hayward Fire Department said.

Buildings in the area suffered structural damage due to the earthquake as well as from the collapse of the McHenry's auto shop.

"I was eating my breakfast when the room started rolling. I dove under the table just as I heard an explosion outside and chunk of cement flew through my kitchen window. That's when the screaming started across the street," Hayward resident Mike Beamer said.

The earthquake while large on the Richter scale, was described by some as a singular rolling motion, with a large jolt in the middle. They said this lasted around 30 seconds.

"This quake was a "strong one"," USGA scientist Penny Gertz said. " This one was around a 6.4 on the Richter scale. The epicenter of this quake resided under Hayward hills, along the Hayward Fault, which runs under the hills."

McHenry's auto shop, deemed structurally unstable after the earthquake, was stabled using ropes by the Hayward firefighters. A searched was conducted as well, and a gas leak was found and capped as well by the firefighters. This leak was caused by the earthquake.

"Three of the six people injured were hurt seriously enough to require hospitalization and were transported to Hayward General Hospital," Vu said. "their were no other serious injuries that have been reported in Hayward.

"People as far south as LosAngeles and as far north as Redding felt the quake," Gertz said.

"Twenty one fire personnel, 12 police and five American Red Cross workers responded to the building collapse, with some arriving within four minutes of the quake," Vu said.

Huntington Story

Who: Janice Jones
What: Shot in the leg
When: 10pm Wednesday
Where: Her motor home in Barstow, California
Why: The gun discharged when it hit the floor
How: Her dog knocked it off the table

On Wednesday around 10pm, Janice Jones was shot in the leg in the back of her Barstow, California motor home.

While she was eating pork chops, her dog knocked her 9mm handgun off the table, and the weapon discharged when it hit the ground.

The incident was handled by California Highway Patrol press liaison Tammy Rye.

“It could have been worse,” Rye said. “The bullet hit two inches from the gas tank.”

Jones was taken to and treated at Huntington Beach Hospital via ambulance. The dog was malnourished as well as bruised severely.

"Jones was treated at our hospital," Huntington Beach Hospital spokesperson said. No additional information was provided.

Jones dog was a Pomeranian named Tombo. It was placed under care of Huntington Beach Animal Control officers.

“It could have done with a little less abuse and a few more of those pork chops,” animal control officer Janet Ngo said.

"Jones has been cited for expired plates, as well as animal abuse charges," Rye said.

5. I would like to go to the 'Natural Light' photo gallery because I enjoy looking at photography exhibits.
6. I believe that this is a wonderful advance in equality in the US. My personal opinion on same sex marriage is that it should be legal everywhere. It makes sense to have it like that, as people should be able to decide whether or not they want to spend the rest of their life with another person of the same sex or not. I think that the refusal also exhibits a strength in our government (which really isn't shown in any other places) and that the court is confident in it's decision it made and is standing by it. I hope this will lead to an eventual nation wide law that legalize same sex marriage.

Students who receive this award have achieved some sort of success whether it be academically or honorably, either or, it requires working hard towards your goals.
"It looks good on you, and makes you a role model," said Student of the Month Alicia Molina.
The student of the month program has been a successful program at encouraging kids to do well in and outside of school.
"The kids are given someone to look up to. Making their peers their role models," said principal Kane.
The student of the month is expected to act like and be a leader, basically hand crafting a role model for other students in the school to aspire to be like.
"Alicia is always on task in class. Her goal is to master the information that is handed to her, and to help others achieve that same goal," said geometry teacher Mrs. Lankes.
The program's goal is to reach out to all students giving them a fair chance to achieve this award. it tries to encourage all students to reach this level of academic achievement.
"The student of the month program shouldn't be abolished, but revised, to Students of the Month," said 10th grader Felicia Crocker.
There is no doubt there is some competition for this award as there is with any, however, the overall projection is a positive one.

Q: What is your name?
A: Felicia Crocker.

Q: Were trying to achieve the Student of the Month award for this past month?
A: I wouldn't say trying. I would say should've received. I did very well in school and held a lemonade stand for Autism.

My Story of the Century

Chernobyl Plant Explodes

Chernobyl was a nuclear power plant in Ukraine, and on April 26, 1986 there was an explosion, causing a massive leak in radiation. The cause of the explosion was the lazy work of employees who failed to acknowledge safety pro cautions. This sent radiation spreading over most of europe and the western USSR.

I think that this was a major heal dine because it affected a large number of people (impact). It was also reported on quickly (timeliness), and was the first large nuclear issue (novelty). The radiation was very deadly and was threatening the lives of millions of people in Europe and the USSR.

6. Ridesharing is a new service that threatens the taxi business. It connects drivers and customers through apps in our smartphones. Essentially, it is the same thing as a taxi, but it is able to bypass lots of the rules and regulations that actual taxes can't. Ridesharing supports businesses like Uber and Lyft. They have been operating since May, even though technically it's not legal in county limits. More than 50 citations have been issued to drivers without chauffeuring permit and a taxi franchise agreement. It is a growing problem in the Austin area because the city council recently held a meeting and were making movements to legalize ridesharing. Taxi drivers everywhere are against this because they say it is unfair for drivers of ridesharing to be able to bypass the rules they are unable to do.

3. Microsoft is going to buy minecraft for $2.5 billion dollars.

6.       If parents have a child, it's their duty to either take care of the child, and raise it as their own. Or, turn it over responsibly to authorities or some other organization that will take care of the child. You should not, under any circumstance be able to kill your own child, defenseless and help less, and go about your life unpunished. They should most definitely have to get some sort of punishment for the death of Colton, or, in the un-likely event they're not responsible, should still earn some type of punishment for the child abuse.
As a result of the ignorance of some workers at CPS, now a child is dead. Is that right? Absolutely not. If four complaints of child abuse is not enough to raise an eyebrow, then new people should have your job and do it corruptly. At the very least, the people who ignored these complaints, should lose their jobs.

iPhone 6 pre-orders: Frustrations, futility, success

Journalism Ethics 3

People for the Ethical Treatment of Animals (PETA) launched a campaign to raise awareness of the slaughter of millions of animals for human use. The slogan for this campaign (also being the heart of the conflict) was "Holocaust on your plate". This sparked lots of controversy in the Jewish community despite the fact that the campaign was funded by a jewish PETA member. The were angered by the fact that the slaughtering of animals was being compared to the mass genocide of over 6 million jews.

i personally think that while this is an unusual comparison, it should be alright to use. one of the comparisons made was the fact that over the course of 7 years 12 million people were killed, and that equivalent of animals are slaughtered every 4 hours. Aside from the fact that it may offend a certain ethnicity, I think it is fine. However, to the over arching picture, it is ethically wrong because the content that was released could easily have considered offensive to a large group of people.

Journalism Ethics 2

Journalists used to under no circumstances, EVER share a story with a source before publication. However, the idea is being more widely accepted to be more accurate than independent. Even in the event of you being a free-lancer, you should still have your peers read your story before publishing. So why not do the same regarding accuracy.

I agree with the fact that you should share your story with only your source before publication. When I first thought about it, I thought that you should only share it with them if they asked. However, now that I've thought about it, it's better to share with them regardless to try to maintain accuracy. Just to have them double-check your facts and make sure they are okay with the publication.

On the day of January 8, 2007, Ben Ownby was abducted while he was walking home from school. He lived in Beaufort, Missouri and was 13 years old. A friend of Ben's from school tipped off the police which gave way to a four day search where not only he was discovered, but another boy was as well, a 15 year old (Shawn Hornbeck), who had been there since he disappeared 4 years earlier riding his bike.

I think that to answer the question, using the names of victims should not be definitely outlawed, but used at the victim or victim's family discretion. If someone wants a lot of publicity after experiencing a traumatic event, more power too them. However, if they would like to not let everyone in the world know of the pains and struggles they went through, they should be allowed to censor their own name from publicly released material.

Current Events Quiz 2

1. APD members are taking classes on how to deal with aggressive dogs because they realized in the classes they took before was not very helpful. They saw this in the light of several recent high-profile dog shootings.
2. The fourth worker who contracted ebola arrived in Atlanta to be treated.
3. The kid's family is suing because they said the Lake Travis Youth Association for ignoring safety in the weather conditions.
4. Apple will be releasing a watch and a new iPhone within the next 6 months.
5. Ray Rice has been charged with domestic violence, and has been banned from the league.
6. A kid at the opening UT football game was using a drone and flying it over the stadium to take pictures. The student was suspended from school, and released pending further investigation. The drone as well, was retrieved from the student.
I believe that this is wrong. The student was only taking pictures of the game, and not intending to harm anyone at all. It was brought up that it might have crashed, and caused harm. Well, I do think that that is definitely possible, however he should've been punished if and only if that had been the case. He should not have been suspended, the police were being over protective.
I think that the police might have been being a little too cautious, even though in the sense that drones are a new technology. However int he future, I think that it might relax a bit, once that the technology is more common. Even then, it might become a problem again, as a use of terrorism.
I think that drones shouldn't be restricted. because new technology is beneficial to society. However if they are being used to break the law, in anyway, such as invasion of privacy, they should not be used, even if the intention is good. This also should not just be restricted to the common citizen, but also the government.

News Values: Prominence

Prominence. This is an example of prominence because it is a story about a potential sickness that could affect people like you.

Reports of respiratory virus hit several states

Officials in several states, including Missouri, are reporting cases of respiratory illness, some severe enough to send kids to hospitals.
In Kansas City, Mo., more than 300 cases of respiratory illnesses were reported last month, according to the state Department of Health & Senior Services. About 15% of the illnesses resulted in children being placed in an intensive care unit, according to a health alert issued Aug. 29.
Ten states have contacted the Centers for Disease Control and Prevention for help in investigating enterovirus — Colorado, North Carolina, Georgia, Ohio, Iowa, Illinois, Missouri, Kansas, Oklahoma and Kentucky, according to WXIA-TV.
Enteroviruses, with symptoms similar to an intense cold, hits its peak in September, according to medical officials.
But it is unusual that there have been so many hospitalizations, CNN reports.
The number of hospitalizations reported could be "just the tip of the iceberg in terms of severe cases," Mark Pallansch, director of the CDC's Division of Viral Diseases, told CNN.
Pallansch said the division is looking into the situation.
WXIA-TV News medical correspondent Sujatha Reddy said children with asthma or allergies are the ones who are suffering the severest side effects of the virus.
"If you see your kid's condition changing — they're going just from having the sniffles to a fever to now, perhaps, difficulty breathing, or they just look like they don't feel good — you want to take them to the doctor or to the emergency room to make sure," Reddy said. "Because these kids that have asthma (or allergies) and get this enterovirus can get very ill."
This particular type of enterovirus — EV-D68 — is uncommon, but not new. It was first identified in the 1960s.
An analysis by the CDC showed at least 19 of the Kansas City children tested positive for EV-D68, according to the Missouri Department of Health and Senior Services.
Vaccines for EV-D68 aren't currently available.
"Many infections will be mild and self-limited, requiring only symptomatic treatment," the analysis said. "Some people with several respiratory illness caused by EV-D68 may need to be hospitalized and receive intensive supportive therapy."
"The virus just runs its course. The illness goes away by itself," Reddy said. "But for kids who may have asthma or may have bad allergies, or have some other underlying medical problem, they're the ones that, potentially, could get more sick."
Denver also is seeing a spike in respiratory illnesses resembling the virus, and hospitals have sent specimens for testing to confirm whether it's the same virus, KUSA-TV reported.
More than 900 children have gone to Children's Hospital Colorado emergency and urgent care locations since Aug. 18 for treatment of severe respiratory illnesses, including enterovirus and viral infections, hospital spokeswoman Melissa Vizcarra told CNN.
Rocky Mountain Hospital for Children in Denver had five children in intensive care and 20 more in the pediatric unit, KUSA-TV reported last week.
"This is the worst I've seen in my time here at Rocky Mountain Hospital for Children," Raju Meyeppan told the station. "We're going to have a pretty busy winter at this institution and throughout the hospitals of Denver."
Will Cornejo, 13, was among the children in intensive care at Rocky Mountain after he came down with a cold and then woke up Tuesday night with an asthma attack that couldn't be controlled with his medicine albuterol. His mother, Jennifer, called 911 when her son's breathing became shallow, and her son was airlifted to the Denver hospital, she told KUSA.

Impact. This is an example of novelty because it describes an event that took place where people could've gotten hurt, however it was barely avoided.

A Close Call for 2 Planes at Newark

Two planes at Newark Liberty International Airport had an unusually close call on April 24, the National Transportation Safety Board reported this week. But air traffic control experts said the hazard was reduced because both pilots were aware of the problem and took evasive action.
A Boeing 737 operated by United Airlines, arriving from San Francisco, flew over a regional jet at an altitude of about 400 feet, with a lateral separation of less than 200 feet, according to the board’s analysis of radar data. While the 737 was still three miles from the runway, the regional jet, an Embraer 145 flown by ExpressJet, was cleared to take off for a trip to Memphis, on a runway that crossed the runway being used for arrivals. But the smaller plane was slow to begin rolling, and by the time it reached the intersection, it was in conflict with the arriving plane, the board said in a preliminary report.
The air traffic controller, recognizing the problem, told the 737 to circle the airport. The pilot of the departing regional jet said he would delay raising the nose for takeoff, according to the board.
That “might be a frightening proximity,” said an independent expert, J. David Canoles, an aviation consultant. But, he said, “if the controller and the two pilots are all aware of what’s going on and coordinating, that proximity doesn’t bother me.”
“Go-arounds are unpleasant but they happen every day,” he said. “When you try to compress traffic, it happens from time to time.”

Burn ban issued for Austin parks and greenbelts

AUSTIN (KXAN) — Officials have issued a burn ban for all Austin parks, greenbelts and preserves — due to dangerous fire hazard conditions in Central Texas. Tthe Austin Parks and Recreation Department is temporarily prohibiting the building of fires and smoking, effective immediately. This includes using wood or charcoal barbecue pits, grills and smokers. However, propane stoves are allowed in designated picnic areas.
The Parks and Recreation Department is working with the Austin Police Department’s Park Police and the Department’s Park Rangers to make sure people abide by the burn ban. Violations may cost between $300 and $500.
“The temporary ban is necessary to ensure the safety of park patrons, surrounding communities and in an effort to minimize the risk of a wildfire in the Department’s parks and greenbelts,” said officials in a release about the burn ban.
Meanwhile, the Department will continue evaluating fire hazard conditions and will lift the ban as soon as they improve.
